چکیده
Adaptive management is a management approach to address uncertainty in natural resources. The origin of the adaptive approach as a tool, the need for an adaptive process and its relationship to environmental management will be described. Variations of adaptive management will be reviewed as well as the definition and institutional role of adaptive management within the BLM. This will include the BLM's need for a landscape approach (both spatially and temporally) for management in the BLM in context of its traditional management requirements and approaches as well as viewing landscapes as dynamic systems with stochastic climatic events.A description of the Ely BLM District's implementation of the Great Basin Restoration Initiative using an adaptive approach to meet the requirements for restoring both resiliency and restoration in the ecological systems will be presented. Lastly, the adaptive process has implications not only for the management of landscapes but it is an essential component of needed change and adapting within the agency.
